Software Architecture & Modeling SIG

The Software Architecture & Modeling (SAM) SIG focuses on two main areas: the roles and responsibilities of the software architect and related functions; and technical matters of interest to the architect / abstractionist / modeler.

Meetings will generally be structured in a two-part format: in the first part a practicing software architect will present topics based on real-world experience in the domain. The second part will be a technical presentation that addresses tools, techniques & methodologies and similar subjects.

Title: Building Search Engine in the Social Media Era

Description of Talk:
Rising of social networks like Twitter and Facebook has been flooding the web with user-generated contents in the amount that was never seen before. As we become more depending on the social media for daily information gathering and social interaction, we have started to demand more from search engines, such as real time conversations and social connections. Such new environment is forcing search engine technology to evolve.

This presentation will first review the traditional search engine technologies and architecture. Then, we will talk about some of the new architectures for supporting real time search and social search. The last part of the presentation is devoted to discussion of the emerging real time web monitoring system, the cousin of search engine. Social media monitoring is predicted to become a mainstream tool for consumers and businesses because the inherent collective intelligece has the potential to further increase the efficiency of finding information and making decision as what search engine has done.

Speaker Bio:
AJ Chen, Technical Architect, Healthline Networks Inc.
AJ Chen, Ph.D., is an advocate of semantic web, social media monitoring, and digital health. As a Technical Architect at Healthline, he applies semantic technology in developing healthcare search engine for consumers. He started SDForum Semantic Web SIG in 2006, a public forum exploring how semantic technology is making the web and social media more intelligent. Working with open communities, AJ also promotes free real time monitoring of social media on web2express.org website.  From 2000 to 2006, Dr. Chen had been developing new genome sequencing technologies for personalized medicine, playing technical and product management roles at Hyseq, Callida Genomics, and Complete Genomics. Previously, Dr. Chen worked with
Nobel Prize winner Dr. Barry Marshall to commercialize new medical innovations in China. Dr. Chen earned his Ph. D. in Biochemistry from U. of Utah and did postdoctoral research after joining Harvard Medical School and Duke Medical School.
